![]() Imani is a young Black actress working in Hollywood and in the music industry, two worlds that are known for being difficult for young marginalized performers. Imani resonates with Calliope because of her strength, though They have to be strong in different ways. “This honestly was a dream role for me, and then it became more of that, the more I got to know her.” But I think truthfully, characters like Juliette who are quirkier or nerdier, I just have always really found to be very interesting,” Sarah Catherine says with a smile. Part of what drew her to Juliette was that difference in personality, an extrovert being drawn to an introvert trying to break free and do her own thing despite her fears. Or, at least she was when she was a teenager. Where Juliette is introverted, awkward, and clearly anxious as she tries to figure out who she really is, Sarah Catherine is more extroverted. They each have learned things about themselves and the characters they play during this process. ![]() These little check-ins with each other to make sure that we're okay or just laughing in between takes, we had so much fun.” ![]() I'll be right back.' And I'll come and get us some LaCroix or something. I think my favorite moments were when it's real quiet and then I'll be like, 'You okay?'” Imani says, chuckling quietly. “We spent so much time even just sitting in silence or just talking regularly, almost like we're not even on set, talking about things connecting with each other. Their bond is obvious, and it comes across in Juliette and Cal’s love story. And it felt so good to see that looks like my relatives, that looks like me, so I was like, ‘that's dope.’”Įven over Zoom, Imani and Sarah Catherine have a chemistry and easy friendship as they bounce off of one another and set each other off into giggle fits while recalling things they love about the characters or experiences they had while filming (including but not limited to: ukulele singalongs, power naps, and shared fruit snacks and Fritos). “But Blade was always so cool to me, so badass and so strong. Scary things scare me, so I just stay away from horror,” Imani laughs. “If I'm being completely honest, I am not a scary movie kinda girl. Meanwhile, Imani cites the 1998 Marvel film Blade, which she’s loved since she was a kid. Sarah Catherine was a huge fan of The Vampire Diaries franchise and also read a copy of Carmilla to help her prep for the role, but her earliest brush with all things fanged and ferocious was with the most famous vampire in the Western canon: Dracula. ![]() While neither actress had been familiar with the short story that inspired the series (Victoria Schwab’s "First Kill" from the 2020 anthology Vampires Never Get Old: Tales With Fresh Bite), they were far from newbies to the vampire genre. “With Gloria, it's like asking a New York native, ‘How would you handle if vampires just moved into your neighborhood?’ versus a hunter that's born preparing for that kind of moment.” “That's literally her lineage, it was something that was predestined for her long before she was born,” Imani says. “I didn't know that I would have so much fun being a vampire, honestly.” For her, the fangs were the kicker, the thing that really helped her realize how much fun she was going to have in the role. “It's really, really exciting being a vampire,” Sarah Catherine tells Teen Vogue. First Kill captured both women’s interest because of how different their roles were from what they’d worked on previously. Debbie, in The Conjuring 3, was haunted by monsters, but didn’t get the chance to be one. Gloria, in Vampires vs The Bronx was more of a narrator and framing device, a storyteller sharing what was going on in her neighborhood. Imani was in Netflix’s Vampires vs The Bronx as the influencer and streamer Gloria while Sarah Catherine played Debbie, one of the characters terrorized by the supernatural in The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It. First Kill isn’t either actresses’ first brush with horror. From the second that series leads Imani Lewis and Sarah Catherine Hook - who play vampire hunter Calliope “Cal” Burns and vampire Juliette Fairmont, respectively - got their eyes on the project, they knew they wanted to play these characters.
